Conchita Supervia, mezzo soprano

Conchita Supervia was born in Barcelona, in 1895. When she was a baby she was baptized Concepcion Supervia Pascual. Her education started at the local convent and when she was twelve years old, she entered the city's conservatory to study singing. Her singing debut was in Argentina, when she was only fifteen years old.

She sanga lott of operas throughout her career and was notably suited to Rossini operas. She was a great sensation in Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia". He chest voice was fantastic and she had a recognizable vibrato. Rossini's coloratura arias, were not a problem with Conchita and she sang them so easily. Also her musicianship and diction were very good and you could understand each word, in whatever aria she sang.

Her career was cut short in 1936 while in London, awaiting the birth of her child. The child eventually arrived but was stillborn, and Conchita died a few hours later. A tragedy, to die at such a early age in the prime of her singing career.
